Today we got a huge amount of information on season 3 of Falling Skies and we have a few theories to float out there about what might be going on in season 3. Every episode description makes it clear that the 2nd mass is in all out war against the Espheni.

The 2-hour premiere which features the episodes “On Thin Ice” and “Collateral Damage” starts us off with the 2nd mass in Charleston fighting alongside the new alien visitors the Volm.

Remember, everything below is just speculation and theories and not fact. If you want facts, checkout our newly released Season 3 information and our interview with Remi Aubuchon about Falling Skies.

Working with the enemy – On Thin Ice and Collateral Damage

The decision by Tom to allow the rebel skitters to fight alongside them is creating problems with the rest of Charleston. Ben and his new friend are the only 2 with the ability to communicate with the rebel skitters and the distrust of Charleston in the rebel skitters will likely expand to Ben and any other deharnessed kid leading to isolation. The real question is, when is someone either in the military or within Charleston going to try to kill the rebel skitters and Ben as we saw was attempted in season 2. Episode 3 titled “Bandlands” talks about a sniper attack from an unlikely gunman, which leads me to think someone is going to attempt to take either Ben or Denny’s life by episode 3.

On the front of working with the enemy, Ben has a new friend: Denny. She is a formerly harnessed kid and like Ben has spikes and super human abilities. In a 2 minute preview of the opening premiere we see Denny tease Ben with a nickname of “Benji” but I question where she came from and if her intentions are good or evil. It is very possible she may be working for the Espheni. Karens attempts to lure Ben nearly worked but after Tom and the others came to his rescue, he wont fall for her tricks again. But will he fall for Denny’s?

A Mole within the Ranks – Badlands

It’s also said there is a mole within Charleston feeding intel to the enemy. By episode 3 Hal claims he knows who the mole is. However Hal’s word to us as viewers is suspect but perhaps only to Maggie within Charleston. Who is Hal going to pin the mole on? There are a few likely options including the rebel skitters, Denny, Marina or even Ben. The distrust within the ranks for the rebel skitters and Ben has not likely gone away and just one whisper of doubt from a family member or Tom (now in a leadership position) could have dangerous results for Ben, Denny and the rebel skitters.

Internal Struggle – At All Costs

Episode 4 titled ‘At All Costs’ starts to dive into the struggle that Hal and Ben are both having. Hal is fighting against the ‘eye bug’ that is likely controlling and influencing Hal to whatever will Karen wanted. The distrust and the attacks caused by the mole seem to be leading Ben to doubt his place among the humans and his ability to return to being a human. Tom meets a powerful new leader played by Stephen Collins. Earlier this year we learned he would be playing the former president of the United States. Just what will Tom learn about the overall war outside of their small resistance group.

Anne is said to uncover information that puts everyone in danger. We know that Tom had the ‘eye bug’ in him prior to him and Anne getting together, which has led many to believe that the baby is not 100% human. It seems pretty clear that Anne either learns something that confirms this or learns something more about the harness transformation process that is going on with Ben and other harnessed kids.

Mutiny and Mistakes – Search and Recover

Marina (Gloria Reuben) is Toms right hand lady when it comes to politics within Charleston but after a mission goes terribly wrong and Tom and Pope are stuck relying on each other, Marina takes matters into her own hands in Charleston. She goes against Tom’s authority, but on what? I can only assume she means to end the relationship with the Volm and the rebel skitters, which would put Denny, Ben and any other kid with spikes in danger of arrest or being killed.

Weaver is out searching for 2 missing members of the 2nd mass, is that Tom and Pope who appear to be relying on each other after a botched mission? Or are other members missing such as Hal? We think its likely Anne and the baby. It is teased by Moon Bloodgood that she leaves with the baby for the best interest of everyone.

The secret is out – Be Silent and Come Out

Hal reveals to everyone the struggle he is going through and the alien inside him. The reveal does not bode well for the entire Mason family. Toms leadership will be in question, Ben’s loyalty will be challenged and Anne and Matt will not be safe from military imprisonment or possible interrogation.

This episode also sees a massive shift in leadership when a group breaks away on a search and rescue. My guess is that Marina has convinced those in charge in Charleston it is no longer in their best interest to keep going and saving children from the harnesses. They don’t trust the ones they have among them now and they don’t want any more. Tom and the 2nd mass clearly won’t agree and go off on their own. Combine that with the reveal by Hal and I think we can safely say they won’t be staying long in Charleston.

Roadblocks and Lines in the Sand – The Pickett Line

As Tom and the family attempt to go and rescue more children, they run into some outlaws who stop them from continuing. Not sure what will happen here, but if Ben is with them they will be hard pressed to stop the Masons for long.

Back in Charleston, there are doubts about this new massive weapon being constructed by the aliens and that ignites another conflict of interests. Here I think we run into a divide between the military and the civilian government. With all the backstabbing and doubts in Charleston, it’s no wonder there is a mole and it will likely cost them many lives and endanger their entire community.

It is also clear that all of this infighting has created a roadblock in the investigation of the mole. But perhaps that’s exactly what the mole wanted. It’s clear that whomever is feeding information to the Espheni has high level influence and access which may be why so much infighting is occurring. Humans are not the only ones who can play politics and fear.

The Calm Before The Storm – Strange Brew

Tom has always had a pension for feeling when something wasn’t right and he has that feeling again. Things are just too calm and on his way back to Charleston from their latest mission, he discovers something that both surprises him and horrifies him. My guess here is that we will finally get a full view of just what the aliens are doing to the kids with the harnesses and just what Ben might expect moving forward.

Weaver and Pope are going at each other (what else is new) about the mole. It’s clear they have a suspect in mind but I think we also know that Popes way of handling things and Weavers are very different. The real worry is if they are wrong and an innocent person is killed as a result.

Place of Fear – Journey to Xilbalba

It’s important to note that this episodes title means “Journey to a place of fear” and is directed by Jonathan Frakes. Knowing both the title and the director, this lead up to the finale is likely going to be full of awesome. Tom learns confidential intel on the heart of the alien operation. Why is this information confidential and who did he learn it from?  Clearly Tom is trying to keep this information to himself but why? My suspicion is that the information is coming from Ben and the rebel skitters, both of whom have very little trust left among Charleston.

Despite the nature of the intel, Tom seems to get the Charleston military to move forward with a massive attack on the Espheni just before a massive explosion halts their efforts. It is here that we finally learn the identity of the mole within Charleston but who is it? I racked my brain for a bit trying to think who would have enough close access to all the operations within Charleston to leak information and the choice was simple: Denny. Who better to be close friends with than the son of the leader of Charleston, privy to all the military movements of the group. We also find out that blood is shed in this discovery, so just who will die?

The World Is Not Enough – Brazil

The 2nd mass and the troops have a huge victory against the Espheni when a base is destroyed and the Mason family is reunited with lost friends, likely Anne and the baby. However, it appears yet another interstellar player puts the fate of earth in doubt. Are the arrival of more aliens, more Espheni coming as backup? Or are they more Volm here to take over where the Espheni left off?

The episodes description smells like a repeat of season 2, having destroyed a major base/weapon and more aliens arrive but could they be misleading us on purpose? Remember there is only so much they can share about the finale without spoiling major plot points within the season or the ending. So on the surface it sounds familiar but chances are it will be very different.

Overall Theories

The mole is going to be someone important, someone known to everyone and someone we would least expect. While Denny is my first choice, it is possible it could be someone else.

Hal’s ‘eye bug’ is allowing control over Hal and he will likely be used as a distraction to keep the 2nd mass looking the other way as the Espheni continue to try and put a stop to their efforts.

The Volm’s intentions seem great at first: technology, aid and fighting power, but the old saying of the enemy of my enemy is my friend ends once the Espheni are defeated.

Tom’s ability to remain a trusted leader among Charleston will be shattered as he fights to protect his family from those within Charleston who would see them gone.

Ben will come to a crossroad and be forced to make a decision on staying with the humans or going out on his own with whatever other de-harnessed kids he can.

As Remi teased us in our interview, how much are Tom and the others willing to sacrifice in order to win?
