By: Robert Prentice
Falling Skies

The new season of Falling Skies starts back up June 9th but we have some spoilers for you early. After recent interviews with E.P. Remi Aubuchon and star Connor Jessup (Ben) we learned more about our new alien arrivals and what they bring to the table. Not everything is what it seems and alliances will be tested to the edge, while groups will splinter.

If you don’t want to read spoilers, stop reading here.

Here is some information from our interview with Remi Aubuchon. Part 1 and Part 2.

Season 2 was all about taking the fight back to the aliens and making their way to Charleston. Clearly there will be a price to pay for resistance. What is the core of season 3 about?

The core theme for this season is what are we willing to sacrifice in order to win. Everything? Are we willing to do anything to win? Tom will learn the hard way that winning isn’t everything, and that there are no magic solutions to victory. In fact, all our characters will be touched by this theme, and their resolve to take back their planet for humans by humans will be tested to the very edge.

We had the opportunity to review some print ads for the new season and got our first look at Mega Mechs. What can you tell us about these new enemies and why we haven’t seen them before?

We pick up the story 7 months after the end of the second season and we quickly realize things have changed for the resistance movement. We have new allies in the form of the Rebel Skitters and an alien race known has the Volm who have been fighting the Espheni for hundreds of years. And we are winning, pushing back the enemy, slowing down their time table and putting a serious dent in their war machine. They have become more desperate and thus have unleashed their “Advanced Terrain Droids” or Mega Mechs as our group has christened them. We’ve never seen them before because the enemy saw no profit in using them against us since it appeared their sub-standard Mechs (yipes, really? sub-standard?) and Skitters were doing the job.

Ben is said to have another kid who has gone through a very similar situation as him (being harnessed and then saved). Will this new friend be a love interest or just a companion?

Well, I don’t want to give too much away, but Ben does have a new “friend” named Denny and she is also a deharnessed kid. We’ll just have to see what happens.

Will the new aliens introduced at the end of season 2 bring in a new language to the show or will the communication continue to be telepathic through Ben and other formerly harnessed kids?

The Volm (our new aliens) do not communicate telepathically, and we’re not sure how they do it, but we hear them in English.

Many have asked for access to more alien tech, especially after the 2nd mass abandoned the mech bullets project. What can we expect on the alien tech front with our new aliens?

As I said above, we are actually starting to have significant victories against the Overlords and this is primarily due to new technology provided by the Volm. There are also some other technological surprises that I don’t want to give away, but suffice to say that even the Rebel Skitters have some heretofore unknown technological tricks up their sleeves.

Our interview with Connor Jessup (Ben Mason) expanded a bit on Denny and a few more core details about season 3.

What can you tell us about your new friend Denny?

So let me give it a little context. There has been a 7 month time gap and everyone gets accustom to living in Charleston. We have managed to put the Espheni on the defense over these 7 months and new people have come in as we rescued more harnessed kids. And one of the characters that come along is Denny, who was also harnessed once and had her harness removed like Ben’s and is struggling with all the same side effects Ben is. Up until this point, part of Ben’s story has been that he feels alone and that nobody understands him. He felt isolated.

Now with Denny and a group of kids all who were once harnessed Ben no longer feels alone and ostracized having friends he can relate to. But to directly answer your question, Ben and Denny are just good friends. Denny along with a group of other deharnessed kids form a group of special ops that go out and do the work that others cannot do along with the help of rebel skitters.

This weekend at the EW Capetown Film Festival, cast members Moon Bloodgood, Drew Roy, Noah Wyle and Maxim Knight screened the first half of the new season premiere and shared some additional details about the new season plus some new exclusives we get to share:

  1. Tom Mason is now president, leaving little time for him to look after his boys or notice what is going on with Anne and the baby.
  2. There is a mole in Charleston and nobody is above suspicion, which tests alliances that have been made.
  3. Moon teases the baby is not normal, and everyone thinks she is crazy but the baby only acts strange in front of her.
  4. The Volm have given humans the ability to remove the harnesses off kids but we don’t know what that means for kids like Ben who had theirs removed manually and have spikes.
  5. Drew Roy (Hal) will start the season in a wheelchair, the reason will be revealed early on.
  6. We will get to see most of our familiar 2nd mass fighters on horseback.
  7. Guest appearances include Stephen Collins as the former president of the US.
  8. Expect guest appearances by Luvia Petersen of Continuum and Dylan Ray Schmid (Young Baelfire) from Once Upon A Time in season 3.
  9. Robert Sean Leonard has signed on for a five-episode arc in season 3. He will play the role of Roger Kadar, a PhD who is obsessive but gifted and runs the power grid in Charleston. The down side is he lives with rats. In fact the kids, who love his science toys, have given him the nickname ‘The Rat King’.
  10. Another familiar face for Noah Wyle is Gloria Reuben, who previously started with Noah on ER. Reuben will play Marina Perlata, an aide to Tom, who has been one of the leaders from the human resistance movement. She is very smart and her political knowledge and experience could be very important for Tom.
