Falling Skies Review 3×05 Search and Recover
Tom and Pope both survive the plan crash, but Bressler did not (Goodbye Max Headroom). Tom pulls Pope out of ย the plane before it blows up, saving his life. Ben rushes to Hal and Maggie to tell them that Anne and Alexis are missing. Kadar explains to Marina and the others that Lexi has alien DNA and is not human.
Weaver wants to set up a search party but Marina doesn’t want to allow it. After talking with Marina, Weaver convinces her that allow him to bring more than just himself to search for Anne and the baby. Marina talks about ‘handling’ the baby if and when they find her. Marina also reveals that she once had a family and she knows what they are fighting for.
Pope wakes up in the forest with Tom asking questions and learns that Tom saved his life. A beamer comes to the crash site and begins searching for survivors. There is a mole in Charleston and everyone knows it. The beamers are not leaving any time soon, so they wait it out.
Matt refuses to be left behind as Ben, Hal and Maggie go to search for Anne and the baby. Marina comes back to Weaver to apologize for being harsh before. Jeanne joins the group on the search and teases Weaver that Marina likes him. Skitters are all over the plane wreck looking for Tom and Pope. Tom remembers that the location of keystone was not revealed until they were in the air. How did they learn about keystone before they did? What took them so long to get to keystone? There may be a spy within keystone too.
Ben finds blood and the team dismounts in search for the source. They find the body of a women face down and fear its Anne. It turns out not to be Anne, much to everyone’s relief. Matt wants to bury her, and not just leave her where she was. Hal disagrees. Tom teases Pope about not knowing how to make a fire. Tom reveals that his father was not the type of father who was around much and he was an angry mean drunk. Much to Pope’s shock, it wasn’t that far off from his own upbringing.
As each person says a little something about the dead women, Hal remains silent, which draws a little attention from Maggie. Marina goes to Dr. Kadar and shows him a photo of the Volm weapon and asks him what he thinks it’s for. Kadar questions if Tom knows about this or not and she lies telling him that he does know about her asking.
Ben and Matt have a talk about the death of their mother and whether she died alone or not. Ben is honest with Matt and for that Matt thanks him. Pope jokes about a frog they are cooking saying all it needs was some white wine, pepper and lemon juice. Pope talks about his kids Brandon and Tanya. Pope explains how a guy nearly run into his kid with his car and Pope followed the guy home. Pope knocks him out and ended up killing the guy, which is why he went to jail. Pope’s big criminal history was nothing more than protecting his family.
Pope wakes Tom up with a snake dropped on him and Pope thinks it was funny. Tom didn’t take too kindly to it. Tom says they are not ‘blood brothers’ and they fight it out in the woods. Just as things start to get heated, skitters are heard near by and they both take off running. They reach a river and have no choice but to jump in.
Tom and Pope wash ashore and they continue where they left off in their fight. Turns out that Tom ended up hurting his leg in the fall and cannot walk. As the search team continues to look for Anne, Jeanne wonders if this is how it all ends. She talks about the half human, half alien baby and how that may be how it ends for them. Jeanne wants her dad to promise that he won’t let them get her. She doesn’t want to be a pawn for the aliens.
Maggie questions whether Hal is okay or not, he has been very distant and uncaring. Ben finds skitter and human tracks near by and they realize that the aliens have Anne and the baby. Ben promises to use the rebel skitter spies to find out where she is. Hal is clearly afraid of Ben’s rebel skitters and being found out. Maggie knows something is not right.
Pope tries to splint Tom’s leg but it’s not enough for him to walk. Tom is not going anywhere. Tom wants Pope to leave without him, but Pope won’t do it. In order to push Pope to leave, Tom eggs him on and pisses him off in order to get him to leave. His plan works and Pope leaves Tom behind. Kadar has his thoughts on what the weapon is for and it doesn’t add up.
Kadar feels the device is overkill. The storage device he sees in the photo indicates that the weapon plans on storing more energy than would be needed to fire a standard weapon. Kadar realizes Tom never sent Marina to look into this and now it seems Marina is going to push for distrust in Tom and the Volm. Just as the skitters close in on Tom, Pope shows up and saves him with his shot-gun.
They find an old truck and it has just enough gas to make it back to Charleston. Back in Charleston Ben and Matt add the bracelet from the dead woman to the tree. Matt is worried about being alone and die alone face down and he breaks down crying. Ben is there to comfort him as Hal looks on with a look of disgust. Tom and Pope approach the city guns pointed at them.
When Tom awakes in the infirmary, he finds out that Anne and the baby are missing.
Review
Tom and Pope have had a few run ins during the last 2 seasons but this was the first time they really got to know each other in an up close and personal way. We learned the most about Tom and Popes back stories so far the past 3 seasons. Tom’s father was not the nice rich dad Pope thought he was. Tom’s father owned a hardware story and was a mean angry drunk.
Pope we knew had 2 kids and a wife but how Pope was in jail was something new. Pope has a temper and that temper lead him to accidentally kill a man who was driving recklessly on his street where his kids played.
The bubbling angry between Tom and Pope comes to a head as they both must rely on each other to survive the woods. Do we think that the issues between them have been finally put to bed? Noah and Colin both do a brilliant job at the love/hate relationship that both Tom and Pope have with each other. I think at the end of it both come out with a bigger respect for each other knowing more about their backgrounds. That could play to Tom’s advantage once everyone in Charleston learns of the Volm weapon and the alien baby.
Ben and Matt have several great scenes together and Maxim Knight (Matt) along with Connor Jessup (Ben) both do an excellent job. On screen and off, Jessup and Knight look like and act like brothers. Ben gets to play the big brother and supportive friend to Matt who feels alone and afraid with Tom being so busy and Anne missing.
Evil Hal is starting to show himself too much and Maggie is starting to notice. When Ben tells Weaver and the others there are spies within the Espheni ranks that he can talk with, Hal looks at him with anger and fear. Hal gives that same look again as Ben and Matt hug near the tree in Charleston. Will Hal try to drive a wedge between Ben and Matt? Will Ben’s inside spies put him and others in danger?
Marina is playing sneaky and Kadar now knows it. The Volm weapon, according to Kadar is not what it seems and he agrees that the Volm are not telling the truth to Tom and to everyone. With the information revealed that Lexi is not human, what if any trust will Marina and the rest of Charleston have in Tom and the mason family?
Favorite Moment
The Mason brothers have each had their best moments alone throughout season 1, 2 and 3 but tonight’s interaction with Ben and Matt was one of my favorites. The reality of life during an alien invasion is harsh and requires that someone like Matt has to grow up much faster than anyone would like. Everyone around him lies to keep him safe from the dark truth of his mother’s death but Ben is up front and honest with him. I mean why not? Ben is half alien, having been kidnapped and harnessed. Matt was nearly harnessed once already, what more can they go through? Checkout the conversation in the clip below.

Mole Tracker
Marina is starting to make waves after she finds out that Tom has kept important information from her about a weapon being developed by the Volm. She takes the specs to Dr. Kadar who adds to Marinas doubt that the weapon is meant for the same purpose as Tom is lead to believe it is. As Marina jockeys for position to take over Toms leadership role, could she be the mole leaking information to the Espheni? Another suspect moved up in the ranks this week, Jeanne Weaver. Several conversations she has had with her dad about the aliens have been cold and methodical. In some ways, it’s as if she is already numb inside, something we see with Karen now that she is fully evolved into the alien world.
So has your opinion changed or are you still sure of your pick for the mole? Vote below and leave a comment with your theories.
