Falling Skies 4×02 Review/Recap – The Eye

Falling Skies

Tom continues to play the ghost and the overlord looking over the camp is losing patience. A harnessed boy is sent down to warn all of them if they don’t turn over the Ghost they will all pay the price.

Anne, Anthony and Denny come across a skitter that they decide to interrogate about what the Espheni want with the children. The skitter explains the children are being taken for re-education. It also talks about a hybrid which is the future of their races.

Lexi doesn’t appear to be well and Ben is concerned. But Ben is not the only one, Dr. Kadar is also concerned. Lourdes prevents him from getting anywhere close to her. The truth is, she is dying. Ben pushes past Lourdes to see Lexi and convinces her that Dr. Kadar only wants to help.

“Would you please stop talking like a damn fortune cookie” ~Ben. Favorite line this season.ย Ben promises to protect her at all costs, and she agrees to see Kadar.

Tom and the others have a way to get through the barrier. They use a Faraday suit that will allow them to pass through the barrier. They need to get as much copper together as possible. I like this because it’s a realistic solution to an otherwise unbelievable situation. While communicating with Cochise, Tom learns that a new power core is being constructed by the Espheni, only this time it appears this core is an offensive weapon.

We finally get an answer to what those flying skitters are, and the sad news is they are former rebel skitters who were ‘converted’ by the overlords into mindless drones. The overlords allowed too much free will from the skitters to the harnessed humans and they won’t be making that mistake again. Tom is given a very clear threat that if he doesn’t help Scorch that his family will be first in line for a new form of ‘evolution’ that the Espheni have planned for humanity. From this threat its implied that they will be hand picking humans to transform them into various purposes. From a simple solider (a less conscience role) or a role of warrior. What does that mean for formally harnessed kids like Ben?

We never see Tom give him answer, but my guess from us seeing him released is that he gave him what he wanted to hear. Tom also got to see just how the barrier protecting this camp works. Though in my opinion that was just way too convenient. I mean, it was up on the screen the entire time in plan view. That was a little lazy on the writers end.ย Theย overlordย also talks about a darkness over the horizon, one that all sides are scared of.

At the brainwashing camp, Matt’s attempts to fight them seem to be in jeopardy when one of their allies has gone missing. The group leader claims he was ‘graduated’ but the truth is Matt knows that he may be on to him.

When Kadar starts to look over Lexi, Lourdes freaks out and tries to prevent Kadar from looking at her blood. As everyone fights over protecting Lexi, she loses control. Her blood does a super creepy thing on the wall while causing everyone to cover their ears from a screeching sound. Maggie and Ben look over her as she sleeps. They make a plan to prevent Lourdes from getting to Lexi. Maggie is happy to have a sane person to talk to. Ben and Maggie share their second close moment of the season and its at least believable and not overdone.

When Ben returns, Lexi isn’t there and he followers her to the edge of camp. What he sees shocks him, as she is meeting with an overlord.

The episode wasn’t a huge action episode but it did help tie up some loose ends from the premiere and answer questions that people had been asking. It also brought up more questions and helped setup the arcs for the season. Here are the questions we have now for the season:

  • What does this ‘human evolution’ mean to the 2nd mass?
  • What is Lexi’s end game with the overlord?
  • What do the 3-rings of unity mean and who are the 3 she referred to?
  • What is this darkness, this 3rd enemy that all sides are afraid of?

There is a lot more to go and after 2 episodes the story plots are set and the arcs have been put out in front of us. I am excited to see the mythology of the aliens grow and see just how much Lexi may end up corrupting both herself and her brother Ben. I have a feeling Maggie is going to be the ground rod that keeps Ben from slipping away as Lexi grows increasingly unstable.
