Colony: Ep. 8 Review, Come In From the Cold

Have you recovered from the first five minutes yet? The whole episode had several turny twisty moments – and led us to places that I don’t think we anticipated going in the first couple of episodes. Hold on to your seats for the last two episodes of the season – this was just a taste of what’s to come!

Did you have any thoughts of what the Factory was? We still don’t know – but the glimpse we got tonight just teased! It’s on the moon – corroborated by the telescope view that Bram and his teacher got. How did nobody see it being built? How could something that huge have been built AFTER the Arrival? They want a better view of the base, and Bram suggests that a trip outside the Wall might be arranged – very dangerous! Is this a good idea? We know teens are prone to reckless actions – but I hope it doesn’t end up in disaster.

And what are they doing up there? The pods that the workers were servicing – are they alien-growing vessels? Are they incubators for some of the technology we may see down the line? And why does it make the workers sick? I sat with my jaw hanging open for that scene! And now that we’ve had a glimpse, how will this impact the story? Will Carlos ever come home?

It hasn’t taken long for things to fall apart. Two weeks ago, Helena commented to – someone – that Snyder  either “gets things under control or he give us the justification we need to make a change.” And this week, she informs him that the chief minister of the Pacific coast is coming to do a performance review. Will Snyder do well? Not likely, despite his assertion that they’re “meeting all of our worker quotas.” Rounding up people for slight infractions (in some cases) to be sent to the Factory? But it’s more than that. Apparently, Snyder’s gone his own way on managing the Bloc.

Helena: Do you think that anyone is afraid to do anything in this bloc?
Snyder: They gave us the power to govern our own way.
Helena: Yes, but they made it quite clear, we must maintain order.
Snyder: Well, I don’t think order comes from fear. It comes from providing people with a decent quality of life.
Helena: Hm. I admire the impulse, but I remember when George Orwell said, ‘If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stomping on a human face. Forever.’
Snyder: Precisely my point. This situation is bad enough. We don’t need to make it worse.
Helena: You should know – no one else is doing it your way.

So, how are other blocs managed? Through more fear, and more intimidation? Proxy Snyder, perhaps I’ve maligned you. But what does this mean for the rest of humanity? And what does the evaluation mean for Snyder? Helena implies that he is not in favor with higher ups – does that mean whoever is overseeing all of the blocs? Or the visitors? Yes, things could be so much worse – but the fear, the curfew, food shortages, Red Hat intimidation, drones, lack of freedom – this could be only the start of the pain that can be inflicted.

Snyder’s not the only one who’s in trouble. Will’s in the doghouse with Katie for telling Gracie and Bram that Charlie is alive without consulting with her first, but priorities! Katie’s got bigger problems. What’s come over Quayle? He’s decided to get out – and threatens to give Katie up unless Will helps him. Quayle tells Will that he’ll turn over his cell and will give Broussard up, in exchange for Will’s help in getting him out of the Bloc. “If you succeed, I’ll disappear, and your wife’s secrets will go with me. If you fail, her name will be the first one I’ll spill under interrogation.”

Phyllis had Will pegged correctly – he loves his wife, and was blind to her activities before, but can’t afford to let them slide any more. He loves her – and will do what it takes to keep her safe. But that plays out in unexpected and drastic ways. But Will, not committed to the Occupation, can’t believe that a man like Quayle would be a turncoat to his side. “People died for you and you’re just going to sell them out?” “You work for the Occupation. Do I really need to justify anything to you?” sneers Quayle. That gives Will pause – what is his role? How far will he go to support Snyder in search of Charlie? Will has a crisis of conscience – he’s done just the same thing. While telling Katie he has a plan to back out of working for Snyder, he’s turning on, and turning in, the people he really sympathizes with. And it’s put him in a terrible position.

Will’s had suspicions about Katie for a while now. Her absences, the circumstances of the house being firebombed, and finally finding the copy of Nostromo – the same book he found in Broussard’s house last week – all have brought his fears to a head. And now he hears from someone who has intimate knowledge of her activities – what can he do? He’s hinted to her that he feels the same way, and has asked her to have patience that he knows what he’s doing and will take care of his indentured servitude in his own way, and his own time – but that’s running out, unless he can take care of the situation.

Snyder insists on meeting Quayle in person. Quayle demands a fully-stocked pickup and an all-access transit pass out of the colony. I’d assume these are rare and extremely hard to get – how does Quayle know about them? Snyder is suspicious of Quayle’s motives – “You care to explain, Mr. Whatever-You-Want, why I should trust a man willing to stab his own friends in the back?” “Because you’re a survivor like me. I can give you want you need – something real,” Quayle offers. He convinces Snyder of the value of his information, but wonders why Quayle wants to leave. “I’m a pessimist when it comes to the future of the Bloc, and I have no desire to live under the thumb of you or your compatriots, or the Raps, he answers. Quayle says that outside the wall are survivors that are pretty much left alone – how does he know this? How many people are out there? Remember, Snyder told Katie that outside the colonies is not a place she wants to be – Snyder doesn’t seem to have much knowledge of the world outside of LA, and maybe it’s very different than he thinks it is! I want to know if Quayle had been outside, or had info sources from the outside – but we’ll never know that now.

Broussard hasn’t gone too far after last week’s raid. This actually surprised me – do those drones not do surveillance? They don’t have facial recognition? And here’s Broussard, out and around in the open, meeting Eckhardt, another Resistance leader. He’s got a daring plan he wants help with – they’ve learned about the plans for the Chief Minister’s visit, and plan to grab him. Eckhardt gives the plans to Broussard, who takes them to Quayle – Katie’s put a bug in his ear, but he still trusts him. Quayle flat out lies to Broussard – of course he’s not talking to the Occupation. Of course he hasn’t sold them out. But, of course, he has. And he takes the plans for the grab and go, and offers them and Broussard up on a plate.

We all know, though, that Broussard is a survivor, and not stupid. Apparently he doesn’t completely trust Quayle, and has Rachel and Katie serving as lookouts when he’s bringing Quayle to meet with Eckhardt. This was another jaw-dropping moment – seeing Rachel shot, point-blank, by the lizard-like Garza was shocking. It makes me wonder if possibly Garza isn’t who we think he is, either – wouldn’t you think someone so high up in Homeland would realize the value of Rachel as an information source? He had her down on the ground, and easily could just have had her taken in for interrogation. But no, in an incredibly stupid move, he kills her. Even Snyder recognizes the stupidity of this action. “You had one job, protect the perimeter!” Will snaps at Garza. “I got her,” he defends himself. But Will’s read the situation correctly – “You got shit.”

They learn that Quayle is former CIA – not a surprise, is it?  I wonder if he knew Phyllis. He certainly was quick to order a hit on her, instead of grabbing her and questioning – would she have revealed something about Quayle’s background? Learning that, Will realizes that it’s likely that Quayle won’t keep his word to hold onto the info about Katie, and knows that he needs to go to Plan B. Quayle is definitely an opportunist – if he sees a chance to better his position by outing Snyder’s top hunter’s wife as an operative, why wouldn’t he? But Will needs help, and he’s read Beau correctly – Beau doesn’t like working for the Occupation any more than Will does, but he doesn’t have Will’s motivation. So when Will approaches Beau indirectly to help him keep Katie out of the hole, Beau barely blinks an eye. He’s a smart cookie, and knows who is worth following – and who isn’t. They cook up a quick plan to pull Quayle out of the rendition house, not trusting him to keep his mouth shut about her. “And we’re not going tolet them torture a man who served his country, now, are we?” Beau gets the picture. Will doesn’t have to spell it out.

And here was another “WHATTTTTT????” moment for me – two quick shots to end Quayle, no hesitation to kill the guards – and Will’s made his choice. This was his defining moment – he is now out from under Snyder. Beau isn’t phased, doesn’t even act surprised – was this the moment he was waiting for as well?

But even after all he’s gone through for Katie, he still can’t tell her that he knows – at least not directly. He said to her at the beginning of this episode, “There should be no secrets in this house.” But there still are, and neither of them seem willing to give them up. They may not be completely on the same side – Will seems more on the side of his family and Katie is still emotionally drawn to fight by Rachel’s death and the work she’s doing with Broussard – but they’re getting closer. And at the same time, they’re farther apart than ever before. With two episodes left, will  they come clean with each other? Will they fight together – or just fight each other? How do you think it turns out for Snyder? He very well may be the Bloc’s best leader, keeping the people from living in complete fear, but will he be able to continue? What do you think is happening?
