Gotham Episode 215 Review -“Mad Grey Dawn”
The past few episodes of Gotham have been a doozy. First Mr. Freeze established himself as a frightful villain and a challenge to the GCPD but then got himself stuck inside the hell-hole that is Arkham Asylum. ย Then we journeyed with Oswald Cobblepot from the self proclamation of insanity to being a completely changed man by the hands of Hugo Strange and Ms. Peabody. We also saw Bruce Wayne take a tumble down a much darker path than I expected this early on in the game, but I suppose with Season 3 being green-lit (woo-hoo!!) they have a whole new season to push Bruce to the point of batty. ย There are a few things I wanted to touch base on about the past few episodes; first off, I want to say that Hugo Strange is already one of the best casting choices they’ve made on this show. ย BD Wong has that perfect air of creepy and his voice over the intercom is reminiscent of the Arkham video game’s Strange, which I really enjoy. ย I am curious to see what his experiments are going mean for Gotham, especially since he has the Maniax stored away, alongside Theo Galavan. ย I could be mistaken, but it seems like there was a glance of “The Joker”‘s red hair too! That’s exciting, especially since his “death” was one of the most disappointing moments of this season. ย Another interesting thing was Bruce finding his parent’s murderer, but then realizing that killing this man wasn’t the way to go. ย I think that is the writer’s way of telling us that Bruce has already begun his journey to becoming a non-killer, and it was really interesting to see that unfold in that scene. David Mazouz is really holding his own this season. I’ve always liked him as young Bruce, but it’s so great to see him pull out all the stops to show such depth to the character.

A big part of Gotham’s newest episode “Mad Grey Dawn” was Ed Nygma’s subtle transformation from just a bit on the crazy side, to completely hell-bent on framing Gordon. ย I love the fact that they started using his signature question mark and that he’s making these crimes one big puzzle. ย What I’m not really sure about is why Gordon and Bullock haven’t put two and two together. Sure there are a lot of people who like riddles, but when it’s something this complex they should automatically think about Nygma. ย Another dead giveaway is how odd he’s been acting lately, Nygma has always been a bit on the odd side, but he has been acting out a bit more lately. I’m no GCPD officer, but I’d still think about questioning him. Regardless, I’m happy that they’re focusing on Nygma a lot recently, he’s one of my favorite characters. ย One of my favorite parts in this episode is when Penguin shows up at Nygma’s apartment. They’re such a dastardly pair and I really can’t wait for Penguin to get back to normal.
On a different note, Gordon’s conviction is so frustrating. ย I really wish that Barnes would listen to him; I mean, why on Earth would he kill Pinkney? There was no motivation there and even if he did know that he was the rat (which he wasn’t) it’s highly unlikely that Gordon would kill a man in cold blood. ย Of course the most frustrating part is that he’s pushing Lee away again, he really needs to hold on to her and let her take care of herself. ย He thinks he knows what’s best for her but it’s really the worst possible thing for Lee and the baby. ย Speaking of the baby, one thing that really bothered me is that Lee drank coffee and wine in the past few episodes. ย If she’s pregnant that’s a huge no-no!

Let’s just pause for a minute and talk about how exciting it is that Paul Reubens is actually playing Cobblepot’s father! Robin Lord Taylor has said multiple times that he had wanted Paul Reubens to play his father, and somehow the producers made that dream come true. ย Everything about the scenes with the two together had me smiling. They really do look like they can be related, but I was just giddy at the fact of how RLT must have felt while they were shooting those scenes together. Unfortunately, there is something a bit off about that situation. I can’t help but worry that he appeared at that moment on purpose and with the way Reubens’ wife and daughter reacted to Cobblepot it especially perks up something odd. There’s a scene during dinner where they focus on Reubens pouring Cobblepot a drink, I’m trying to figure out if the cufflinks match Butch’s or if there may be some connection to a crime family hidden in there, but nothing seems to come to mind.
The end of this episode of Gotham leaves so many questions to be answered, what happens with Gordon? Now that Barbara is awake what chaos will she cause? Are Cobblepot’s new family members part of something much bigger than just Reuben’s happy family? ย With Bruce finally understanding how the streets of Gotham work, what will his next step be? I’m so excited to see this show gain so much traction and weave such thick webs that are sure to untangle in some astonishing ways. ย The fact that Gotham has been renewed for a third season just makes me even more excited! I can’t wait!
