The Devil Is A Part-Timer

Anime Classics – The Devil Is A Part-Timer Review

Foiled by a hero when he’s inches away from conquering the world, the devil finds himself in modern-day Tokyo. With no real-world skills to speak of, the devil is forced to make ends meet flipping burgers at a fast food joint! To stall any further plans of world domination, the hero tracks the devil’s trail and takes on the lowly tasks of a telemarketer.

This Tuesday, Funimation re-releases the popular The Devil Is A Part-Timer as part of their anime classics line. In simple terms this line of anime is what Funimation classifies as best selling series. It also comes at a reduced price which is nice. So beyond that, is this series worth picking up? The answer is yes!

The series centers around Sadao (Satan) and his general Shirō. They escape Ente Isla through a gate to modern Tokyo, Japan. They were running from Hero Emilia who was bent on killing him. However in modern Japan there isn’t enough magic. So both change forms to look like normal kids and Sadao gets a part time job. That job is working at a burger joint whose name is MgRonalds, sound familiar?

Things get weird when Sadao realizes the girl he is crushing on is actually the Hero Emilia. As things progress we find that all the characters roles in the world change. Sadao is actually helping people. Add to that some fun slice of life antics that include a fast-food store war and more enemies from Ente Isla.

More comical than serious, the series does have a few moments of genuine action. There is even some magic use. Moments of fan service can be found in the series but nothing overly forced. Bottom line is The Devil Is A Part-Timer is a fun series for those looking for an unserious anime. There isn’t an interesting over-arching plot line to speak of but if you just want something fun and simple, this is for you.
