Heroes Will Rise: Gotham Season 3 Episode 15 Review

The Riddler has Arrived

After a very long stint away Gotham has returned.  The end of the mid-season finale, or whatever it was, showed Edward Nygma, Riddler, putting a bullet in Oswald Cobblepot’s chest and, surprise, he threw him into the river! I really like the callback to when Gordon was supposed to kill Penguin. I have to admit I really held my breath hoping it wasn’t real.  Nygma has some issues going into this next episode.  He’s taking pills that make him see Oswald in strange hallucinations that tell him what to do, or rather tell him like it is.  Nygma is struggling with the fact he killed his best friend and his mentor in life.  He needs someone else to guide him and that is the main focus of this episode.

He tunnel visions on Gordon, but when he sends a singing gram to guide his “nemesis” he realizes that Gordon is MIA.  After a rage induced hallucination at the chess match, Nygma immediately fixates on Lucius Fox.  He hopes Fox will be the one to finally answer his riddles and sets up an elaborate plan to find out.  Harvey gets caught up in Nygma’s craze and ends up being the pawn that draws Fox.  After a lot of disappointment Nygma comes to the conclusion that he does not need to have anyone telling him who he is, other than himself.  He finally pushes himself and declares the he is now The Riddler and dumps his pills.

Gordon? Bruce? Owls?

Bruce really had a rough go last episode, but in the end he truly became the man he is destined to be.  His declaration of drawing the line between justice and vengeance and saying that he wasn’t going to kill was an extremely emotional and fantastic moment. Bruce becomes more determined to find himself and decides to keep moving forward despite the loss of Selina.  He messed up when he lied to her, though he thought he was doing the right thing.

Twists and turns happen and Bruce winds up stuck in a cage up in snowy mountains, replaced by fake Bruce! With this, it seems like his push towards becoming Batman is even closer than I had actually thought! I’m excited to see if the rumors of Ra’s Al Ghul are true, and if so he’d be in present in two current DC shows! (No I’m not caught up on Arrow :P)

Gordon has an interesting story line this episode. First he meets up with his long lost uncle and learns the truth about his father.  Then he is given a choice about the Court of Owls.  Now that Gordon knows about the under belly he faces a big choice and only time will tell what he’ll decide!

Penguins Never Die

Let’s not pretend people are unaware of my love for Robin Lord Taylor so I was very sad when Nygma shot Penguin!  I enjoyed the hallucinations Nygma was having with Penguin, especially the random musical number.  I wonder if Penguin’s confession of love for Nygma made Nygma feel any guiltier about what he did.  Maybe he was too confused and angry to realize what Penguin told him? I guess we’ll find out when Penguin re-appears, alive and well! I’m also excited to see what is going to happen with Ivy, maybe this will be her push towards the dark side?  I know I can’t wait to find out!
