The Magicians: Do You Like Teeth? – Review

season 3 syfy The Magicians

Though not this season’s strongest episode, “Do You Like Teeth?” keep this epic adventure moving forward and introduces a new character, Poppy! The Magicians is doing a lot of things really well this season, making it one of the hottest shows on television currently. And even if “Do You Like Teeth?” wasn’t a gold-medal episode for the show, it’s still a pretty solid hour of enjoyment. Fans have been waiting for the introduction of Poppy, played by Felicia Day, since her involvement was announced – and boy does she know how to make an entrance.

Let’s start off with what I knew would happen, Alice and Julia. Julia really just needs to accept the fact that the magic is hers and she can either do something spectacular with that or mope about it for the rest of her life. As expected, Alice can’t handle it and her body rejecting it could very well kill her – again. Penny is the only one who sees the dangers in this transfer and it’s quite entertaining to watch him try and dissuade them. I do feel badly for Penny though, being stuck on a plane where you can’t really participate in your own story is a really shitty way to live. With the Truth Key there is at least a way he can kind of interact with the crew, but I have a feeling something will have to be done about his predicament sooner rather than later.

Our Dramatic Duo – Margot and Eliot aren’t really faring well in Fillory with the Fairy Queen. Unable to get our of her marriage to the tiny child prince of the Floating Mountain Island people, she’s instead been refusing to consummate the marriage. Not a bad call in my opinion. But you know how that Fairy Queen is, it’ll be their heads on a platter if she doesn’t go through with it. Though they make quite the discovery in the mushroom field, their overall story line is a bit toned down this week, with their characters even realizing and acknowledging it. It will be great to see the two of them back in full on “Mega-Bitch” mode, but I think for the overall story this week their more muted involvement was okay. That is one thing that I have loved about this season, everyone is getting a chance to really shine somewhere in the story.

Quentin’s story line grabs me the most this episode, with introduction of new character Poppy. As Eliot has High King duties to play and a puppet to act like, Quentin has to take the Muntjac out on his own in search of another Key. He surprisingly finds not only the key, but also Poppy, an old Brakebills student who was lost in Fillory during spring break. I don’t know if maybe it’s just that she’s been drifting on a piece of wood all by herself for a few weeks, but damn is she chatty and has she got something up her sleeve. Instead of finding the key, Poppy forces the key on him which leads to a really interesting trip. This is the worst key yet, if the Truth Key makes people uncomfortable when they hold it this one has got to be a million times worse. So bad in fact, that many who hold onto if for too long end up taking their own lives. You see, it creates a projection of yourself – the meanest, most depressed and angry version of yourself you can imagine. And then it just constantly criticizes you over and over day and night until it slowly wears you down. Quentin is for sure not the best person to be holding onto this key. Of course by the time Poppy realizes that he is being too stubborn to give it back to her and wants to handle it and fix everything on his own. Bad idea Quentin, bad idea. After a small tiff over possession of the key, trust is broken, the key (and Benedict) with him are both eaten by a dragon in the water – gone forever, or so it seems.

Even in the few “down” episodes that we’ve had from The Magicians so far this year, the show overall continues to be spot on with the writing, story intricacies, and performances. I like that each character has really been given an opportunity to shine, and that they each are contributing to  this Quest in their own unique ways. We’ve got a long way to go before Magic is back, but I think they’re all hungering for it more and more.
