Gotham “Year Zero” Season Five Premier Review

Burn It All

Gotham has returned. The last season of my favorite show has begun and I genuinely do not know how to feel. I am excited, but I also feel super sad. Gotham has been a wild ride from the very beginning. For me, personally, I could not stand the first episode (I’m sure there’s a review stating that fact) and it slowly started getting addicting. There has been such strong emotions throughout all of the seasons. We’ve seen characters rise and fall, live, die, and live again, and change sides many a time. I know that this season is going to just explode as everything comes to an end and this series will wrap up. Maybe this show will spin-off into something else or maybe DC will move it to the DC Universe? One can only hope. Here we go.

Living in a Villain’s Paradise

We get an interesting tease of the future at the beginning of this episode. Everyone is coming together to fight the common evil, which is apparently the government. What I want to know is how we got to this point? It’s weird, but I guess we will find out how it works out. Also, where is Barbara, with the events of this episode it’s interesting to not see her there, but we’ll get to that. Factions took over Gotham City; each baddie has taken over a section, with the GCPD being probably the smallest. Zsasz has a section, Penguin of course has a section, the Sirens have a section. A turf war is bound to happen!

Oh my gosh, the spotlight with Jim and Bruce meeting! I know that they had that moment in the last season too, but it’s still so fun to see. I cannot wait for the Bat Signal to actually become a thing! Do you think we’ll see it? I really hope that they don’t actually show us Batman. Let’s hope they just give us a small teaser of Bruce either looking at the cowl or a glimpse of him in the shadows at the very end of the series.

Will we see Catwoman before the end of the season? It seems very likely. Especially if Bruce takes her to the witch to get “cured”. Man, what Selina said to Bruce… “What did me in was being your friend”… Ouch. Bruce was just trying to be friend. Bruce genuinely loves Selina, what a sad thing for him to hear. This might be the beginning of their contentious love.

Have His Steak

Ah Penguin. You guys know my love for Cobblepot and nothing has changed. He’s back and just as Penguin-y as ever! The fact that he’s running this factory with no regard for anyone else but himself makes so much sense. Plus, naming his dog Ed? That’s adorable. Penguin is so lucky he hasn’t died yet. How many attempts on his life have there been? Plus, the gun misfiring at point-blank? What a lucky Penguin.

I wonder if he will be the end of Barbara like he was the end of Tabitha. I genuinely can’t imagine that Tabby is dead though. It does not seem like a Gotham thing to do. It would be kind of funny if Butch came back to find her dead and then all hell broke loose. Barbara vowed to take revenge on Penguin, but he’s proven to be unkillable, so will that go sour for Barbara? We’ll find out!

Speaking of Ed, what is going on with him? He’s sleepwalking, his hair is all long and emo looking, and he’s apparently not Ed? I wonder what Hugo Strange did to him. It seems likely that he’s repressing Ed into his mind, but who has the controls the rest of the time? Also, we’ve seen Ed after Hugo’s experiment. Where’s Lee? Could Lee be the witch that the nurse told Bruce about? I wonder!

Helicopter Down

The fact that Bruce and Jim did not think that the helicopter was going to get shot down seems a little ridiculous. They knew that there was firepower in the city and helicopters make a lot of noise. The helicopter was a giant target. I knew what was going to happen that entire time. It does make me wonder who shot it down though. Could it have been Jeremiah? He did have his helper in the GCPD so we know that it has already been breached. Jim did bring up a good point that Penguin has that kind of firepower, but Penguin would have fessed up to knowing about it without question. It was fun to see everyone come to try to get the supplies, but ultimately Bruce’s cunning thinking allowed the GCPD to prevail!

All in all, this episode was a strong come back for Gotham. I am so sad that this is the last season, but I know that it’s definitely gearing up to be the best and most exciting. I am hoping that everything they have been building towards comes true. We have so much to still learn. Will Sofia return? What will come of Jeremiah? So many questions to be answered in such a short amount of time! I can’t wait.
