Netflix TUDUM 2023: All The News & Reveals

By: Robert Prentice

Today live from Brazil Netflix walked through its slate of upcoming films and TV shows for the rest of this year and early parts of next year. At just over 2 and 1/2 hours they covered over 24 different properties. Many fans were excited to learn more about their favorite shows from Wednesday Season 2, Stranger Things Season 5, to the live-action adaptions of One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The current WGA strike has led to a stoppage of most productions whose scripts were not already completed. This means that today’s reveals for Stranger Things were just a casting announcement and nothing else. However, that announcement was handled by a former co-star of the actress, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Linda Hamilton will be joining the cast of Stranger Things Season 5. That’s still exciting to hear, but for now, production in GA is on hold due to the writers’ strike.

Now let’s dive into the two live-action adaptions that are based on manga and anime titles.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

In the second attempt to adapt this series into live-action, Netflix showed off a teaser showing off the 4 elements and then brought the cast out to talk a bit about the show. No footage of the new series was revealed, but we did get a date of early 2024 for the new show as well as character key art for each of the 4 main cast members.

Based on these character photos, I am a bit more excited about what they have done with this newest live-action attempt. But we have yet to see footage so I will temper my hope for now.

One Piece

Probably one of the most anticipated reveals of the night for fans around the world. Netflix’s attempt at Once Piece has many worried. I personally have never read the manga or watched the anime so I don’t have a frame of reference to judge this yet, but sound off in the comments below and tell us your thoughts.

One Piece hits Netflix on August 31st.

Next, Netflix is trying to beef up its action and film portfolio with some renewals and new drops announced today. First, Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that Fubar was renewed for a second season. Gal Gadot also dropped her newest spy thriller which comes from the directors and producers of Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning and The Old Guard, Heart of Stone. Check out the trailer below.

Gal Gadot is Agent Rachel Stone, the only intelligence operative who stands between her global, peace-keeping organization and the loss of its most valuable — and dangerous — asset, codenamed: The Heart.

AI is hot right now for a lot of reasons, and Hollywood has wasted no time saturating the market with content around that. The real question is does this film jump into that market too late? With so many TV series and films already tackling the subject matter, will audiences tune in? We shall see.

Wednesday was a smash hit for Netflix, and Jenna Ortega was absolute gold as Wednesday Addams. With the series renewed for a second season, the cast talked to us a bit about their favorite theories and where things might go in season 2. No new footage was seen yet, again due to the WGA strike and the fact that things are just getting started for the new season but check out the cast video below.

To round out all the news from Netflix’s event, there was also news and teasers for several additional titles linked below.
