“Twisters” Drops Big Game Teaser and Trailer

By: Robert Prentice

Hollywood is at it again making sequels nobody asked for. Twister (1996) was a classic that didn’t need another film in the franchise and for many, including myself, still holds up today. Growing up in the mid-west with Tornados this film was among some of my most watched and cherished films. So, when the teaser dropped during the Big Game last night, I rushed to check out the trailer and see whether this sequel (or reboot) was going to be worth it.

As you can see from the trailer, this appears to be far more of a reboot than a sequel. Many aspects of the scenes, including some of the iconic moments, lines, and elements appear to be near identical remakes of those from the original film. However, unlike the more serious tone of the original, this reads more like an over-the-top Syfy channel Saturday B-movie affair.

I do not have high hopes for this film, which is touching down July 19th. Below is the official synopsis for the film:

Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos, In the Heights) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.
