The trip from Westeros to a galaxy far, far away, is a lot closer than we thought. It was announced by Disney today that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films. This news both shocked and excited fans of Game Of Thrones and Star Wars for different reasons. Fans of the HBO series are excited to see what both creators will bring to the Star Wars universe. Though some Star Wars fans are concerned what they might do to the franchise.

What we know so far is that the series of films will be separate from the episodic ‘core’ Star Wars films. They will also be separate from the recently confirmed trilogy of films being produced by Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

The timing seems to fit with the end of Game Of Thrones right around the corner for the pair. Disney has not been shy about making their intentions clear on where they plan to take Star Wars. Acquired in 2012, Disney paid 4 billion for Lucasfilm. Since that purchase they have continued to expand the core films while branching out to origin stories for many of the key characters and story points. The addition of a new series of films from Benioff and Weiss may help bring in a broader audience with a perhaps darker ‘Star Wars’.
