Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards were announced this morning. The award show will air February 9th on ABC, and similar to last year there will be no host. ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke said “There was a lot of conversation about which way to go and there may be a day when we decide to have a host again, but the focus has been on the most entertaining show and not the host.” Though there won’t be any hosting drama, the nominee list did strike up a chord of controversy in the Best Director category, and many have taken to social media throughout the day to express their thoughts. Though no women were nominated for Best Director, the Academy was quick to point out that a record 62 women were nominated this year across all categories. Potential female directors left out of the nominations today include Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), and Marielle Heller A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood). The best picture category shows a wide variety of films; from traditional Oscar expectations, outside the box films, more intimate stories, and even a genere-thriller as the first South Korean film to ever earn a nod for the big award. Overall, Joker comes out on top with 11 nominations, followed closely by 1917, The Irishman, and Once Upon a Time In Hollywood with 10 nods apiece.
