Outlander: NYC S7 Premiere was SMOKIN’!

From Starz and  TIBS Correspondent Samantha Kraupner:

On Friday, June 9th, STARZ celebrated the World Premiere of Outlander season 7 at the Tribeca Film Festival. The cast took New York by storm all week with multiple morning and daytime talk show appearances, a live podcast taping at 92NY and culminating in the star-studded red carpet event at the OKX theater at BMCC. Outlander stars Caitríona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, David Berry, John Bell, Charles Vandervaart, Izzy Meikle-Small and Joey Phillips all attended the season 7 premiere screening as part of Tribeca Film Festival’s opening weekend. They were joined by executive producer Maril Davisand author of the Outlander book series, Diana Gabaldon.

Here’s the video of the red carpet entrance:

The season seven premiere episode played for an enthusiastic crowd of fans who laughed, cheered and sang along to the iconic theme song. Following the screening, Caitríona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin and Maril Davis joined in a lively conversation with moderator Ginger Zee from Good Morning America, discussing what fans can expect from the new season, while trying their best to avoid any spoilers! The panel will be available to view on Friday, July 16 (I think), and I’ll add the link here once we have it!

Sam’s report: New York City was the place to be last weekend. It was literally smoking, thanks to the Canadian wildfire smoke drifting south and east. But we had a great time!

But it was also a hot place to be as hundreds of dedicated Outlander fans invaded the city to celebrate that the latest year-long “droughtlander“ between seasons 6 and 7 was finally coming to an end.  Many prepared by re-watching the series starting with Season 1 Episode 1.  Since there were 75 episodes within seasons 1-6, if you had started on April 2nd and had watched one episode each day, you would have ended your rewatch the day before the season 7 premiere on June 16th.  Many online groups watched and discussed the past seasons together.  Our Outlandish Chicago group did this with several members discussing their favorite parts of each episode in daily posts.

Many fans were also able to celebrate the upcoming season by attending the Season 7 premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.  A limited number of tickets were sold online for this several weeks ago for $35 each, and those not lucky to have been able to purchase tickets then, were able to queue up in a standby line the day of the premiere.  I had some local friends who did this and they ended up with seats in the same row that I was in.  In fact, the standby line was much shorter than the queue for ticket holders.  Since it was general admission with tickets with specific seat numbers assigned once you entered the theater, many fans lined up hours in advance in hopes that their dedication would ensure them seats close to the stage.   But in typical Outlander fan fashion, fans passed the time in line getting to know new friends and catching up with others.

There were several familiar faces in the crowd and it was great to see them all!  At one point I walked down the block with my mobile phone and said hi to everyone as I filmed the line.

Once inside the OKX Theater there was a small red carpet with a very small number of press reporters and photographers.  I was allowed to stand behind the press line and was fortunate to be able to get a few decent photos of the actors, including some of the new faces that I am predicting will become fan favorites!  Charles Vandervaart (William), Joey Phillips (Denzel Hunter), and Izzy Meikle-Small (Rachel Hunter) are all adorable, energetic, and performed their press duties like seasoned pros!  I am looking forward to seeing and hearing more from them this season.

Fans were thrilled to find out that the actors would be sitting amongst the fans in the audience to watch the first episode with us.  Some extremely lucky fans got to sit near the cast or were able to photograph them as they made their way to their seats.

It was an interesting experience to watch the first episode with the crowd that night.  The audience was very interactive, clapping, hissing, and gasping at the appropriate times, and even singing along with the theme song.

And more, from Starz: To end the evening, STARZ hosted an intimate reception at Verōnika, located inside Fotografiska where guests sampled creative cocktails made with Sam Heughan’s The Sassenach Whisky and his newly released The Sassenach Gin, and enjoyed wagyu beef crostini with chimichurri, beet cured salmon blini with creme fraiche and polish caviar, tomato and fennel confit tartare and a beef tenderloin carving station with vegetables.

Sam Kraupner adds: I’ve posted some of my favorite photos from the weekend on Instagram. And I have a public photo album on Facebook with several dozen more photos from the premiere red carpet and after episode interview panel here.

And, of course, Erin and I will be discussing all things regarding Season 7-Episode 1, the premiere, etc on Monday evening as we kick off this season’s Outlandishly Three If By Space’s Outlander GAB. We will be doing an Instagram live on the new account, OutlandishlyTIBS, starting next Monday, June 19, 9 pm eastern/8 pm central.

Huge thanks to Sam Kraupner! Sam is an Outlander super-fan, attending events in several countries and sharing her fantastic photos. Sam has been my co-host for The Outlander Gab since our first episode, and has been a regular correspondent for TIBS.
