Outlander Season 6 is Officially In Production!

With a Twitter name change – to Outlander Is In Production! – the Starz show announced today that they are beginning filming! A sigh of anticipation has filled the fandom. Of course, we all know the drill – it will still be months before Episode 601 airs, but we can look forward (I hope!!) to snippets of film, 30-second bits and greetings, maybe a Q&A or two.

The video gives us quick glimpses of the preparation for season 6 – the cavernous interior sound stage; sets, including the stable, the town, the big house, a church. Claire’s medicine cabinet was one of the props we saw. And who wouldn’t love to have one of those models as a souvenir! (Frankly, I’ve wanted one since we saw Gary Steele’s models in Season 2!) Here are some of the stills:

There was also a close-up of the front page of the script for episode 601, revealing that the name of this episode is Echoes! Matt Roberts commented on this in response to a question about whether it referred to the seventh book, Echo in the Bone:

It is not, which is funny, and I know people are going to leap all over that.
When you see the first episode, the title will speak for itself. Each character will be dealing with something from their past and it will help us tell stories going forward. There was a different title on my very first drop. Sometimes that happens. You read it again and you go, wait a minute, hold on a second, there’s something better here.

Starz said this about S6, which should be largely based on the sixth book in the series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes:

The sixth season of “Outlander” sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie’s fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America. Establishing a home in the New World is by no means an easy task, particularly in the wild backcountry of North Carolina – and perhaps most significantly – during a period of dramatic political upheaval. The Frasers strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which – as Claire knows all too well – is unwittingly marching towards Revolution. Against this backdrop, which heralds the birth of the new American nation, Claire and Jamie have built a home together at Fraser’s Ridge. They must now defend this home – established on land granted to them by the Crown – not only from external forces, but also from the increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care. For the Frasers and their immediate family, “home” is more than simply a site in which they live, it is the place where they are laying the foundations for the rest of their lives. If Season 4 asked “What is home?” and Season 5 asked, “What are you willing to do to protect your home?” then Season 6 explores what happens when there is disharmony and division among the inhabitants of the home you’ve created: when you become an outsider, or an ‘outlander,’ so to speak, marginalized and rejected in your own home.

Cast members responded to the news:

What specific scenes from Breath of Snow and Ashes are you looking forward to? Let me know!
